Business Education programs prepare young people for the challenge of the college business curriculum, prepare them for employment in business, and provide business-related instruction which can be applied to personal use. Students gain understanding of business concepts, become familiar with the role of the computer as a business tool, and prepare for further education in career areas requiring college preparation such as accounting and business administration. Several courses provide hands-on experience with computers. Students gain direction concerning the many opportunities available to them in today’s global economy.

B162 Computer Skills & Applications

Computer Skills & Applications is designed to allow students to master the use of essential computer software they will apply to high school and college work in all subject areas. Development of proficient skill is also covered. Students increase their computer productivity using Word, Excel, and FrontPage to produce memos, reports, tables, graphs and charts, and web pages. Application of basic English skills such as spelling, grammar, capitalization, and punctuation is reinforced. Students who complete this course and earn a B or higher may be eligible for college credit when completing advanced coursework at Harper College.

B163 Advanced Computer Applications

Advanced Computer Applications uses the Microsoft Office Suite to complete database, spreadsheet, word processing, desktop publishing, computer presentations, and integrated applications. Features such as merge, sort, labels, and templates are explored in the preparation of research papers, multi-page reports, letters, memos, and presentations. Fonts, graphics, and color are combined in the development of desktop publishing documents. Students also are given an opportunity to experience voice recognition capabilities. Students are expected to produce documents in accepted business formats. Students completing this course may be eligible for Microsoft Office Specialist Certification. Students who complete this course and earn a B or higher may be eligible for college credit when completing advanced coursework at Harper College.

B164 Advanced Computer Skills and Applications

This is a full-year course combining B162 Computer Skills & Applications and B163 Advanced Computer Applications. Students who complete this course and earn a B or higher may be eligible for college credit when completing advanced coursework at Harper College.

B181 Introduction to Business

Introduction to Business is a combination of an introductory business course and consumer education. Students will develop a basic understanding of the relationship between businesses and consumers. Students complete projects that emphasize economic systems, business structures, money and banking, stocks and bonds, insurance, credit and taxation. This course meets the District 211/State requirement for Consumer Education. Placement in Introduction to Business is based on incoming placement scores.

B184 Business Explorations

Business Explorations is designed to introduce students to selected topics associated with the business environment. This course provides the framework for understanding the development and structure of American business in a global market. Topics covered include management and business organization, human resource management, marketing, finance, accounting, computers, business law, and social responsibilities of business. Placement in Business Explorations is based on incoming placement scores.

B223 Sports and Entertainment Marketing

Sports and Entertainment Marketing is a course designed to teach marketing concepts through (applied to) the sports and entertainment industry. Students will learn and apply the functions of marketing as they create projects related to marketing concepts. Students experience selecting locations, logos, advertisements, promotions, merchandise, and much more as they develop their projects. Guest speakers enhance classroom instruction by sharing personal experience and informing students how to achieve a position in the sports and entertainment marketing industries.

B224 PIE (Practices in Entrepreneurship)

This integrated class offers students an opportunity to use their culinary skills in a practical business application. Students who enroll in this two-period connected class will learn the skills required to start and manage a small business. Students will apply economic, management, marketing, accounting, and business law concepts in a bakery/coffee shop scenario.

B232 Web Page Design

In Web Page Design, students incorporate graphics and multimedia into professional web sites using the Macromedia suite (Dreamweaver, Flash, Fireworks). Students also learn HTML. This class will focus on web page planning, basic design, layout, construction, set-up and maintenance of a web site. A web server has been established to which students can post pages, creating an in-school intranet site which allows students the opportunity to experience the full realm of web site management. Students who complete this course and earn a B or higher may be eligible for college credit when completing advanced coursework at William Rainey Harper College.

B265 Desktop Publishing

Desktop Publishing is for the student who is interested in computer graphic design. This class uses the most advanced features of Microsoft Word as well as InDesign and Photoshop. Desktop publishing design principles are reviewed as students complete sample projects including designing business cards, letterheads, envelopes, CD covers, flyers, advertisements, newsletters, certificates, and brochures. Successful students from this class may be eligible to enroll in B366 Desktop Publishing Independent Study.

B274 Business Media Production

Business Media Production is a course designed to create effective business presentations in a multimedia environment. Business Media Production focuses on principles of integrating software tools to create presentations through the use of video, sound, photo, and text. Students research topics using the Internet and work with digital camcorders, cameras, scanners, and video and graphic editing software. Students develop skill in producing and presenting effective professional presentations combining communication skills, appropriate writing skills, and business marketing concepts. Software tools include Microsoft Movie Maker, PowerPoint, and Producer.

B267 Study Skills

Study Skills is designed to teach students effective study habits including the development of time management and organizational skills. Taking well-organized notes, test taking strategies, and reading strategies are included. Personal learning styles will be analyzed relative to teaching styles in order to maximize learning across the curriculum.

B285 Consumer Education

This required course exceeds state requirements for consumer education. Students will receive instruction in budgeting and savings and investing, credit, insurance, comparative shopping, banking, income taxes, advertising, and consumer protection.

B332 Business Internship

Business Internship is designed to provide students with an opportunity to develop real-world experience for academic credit. Classroom instruction during the school day will meet the Consumer Education requirement for students enrolled in this course. In addition, students will take part in an active classroom environment that fosters business knowledge through a variety of projects involving marketing, sales, and advertising. Job application, communication, and human relations skills are emphasized. Students earn one unit of credit for the work experience and one unit of credit for the related class. Students also may participate in a related club where they have opportunities to develop leadership and business-related skills. This course meets the District 211/State requirement for Consumer Education.

PREREQUISITE: Evidence of work with your counselor on career planning for the occupational focus or completion of high school course work related to your occupational goal and potential training stations. Department approval is required. Students must be 16 years of age or older. LEVEL: 3, 4 One year Two units

B352 Business Mathematics Applications

Students will receive extensive hands-on skill practice applying mathematics problems in real-life settings. Students will learn to use business forms and to keep personal and business records. Business transactions are completed using proper procedures and basic mathematical skills. Students who take this course will develop skills that are tested on the Prairie State WorkKeys Assessment.

B384 Business Management

B384 Business Management provides a critical understanding of how business organizations work and are managed—their goals, strategies, structures, environments, and the motivations and interests of the people involved. Students will analyze the management functions (planning, organizing, leading, staffing, controlling) and their implementation and integration within the business environment. This course will provide students with an opportunity to learn about global business and the skills necessary to lead companies through a constantly changing landscape. Through a variety of unique classroom projects, group discussions, guest speakers and lectures, students will take with them the skills to become a leader in the business world.

B386 Accounting 1

Accounting will supply the college-bound students and those interested in the field of business with the tools necessary to succeed in accounting. Students will gain a basic understanding of accounting systems and procedures including the handling of cash and credit transactions, payroll, special journals, subsidiary ledgers, adjusting and closing entries, and the preparation of financial statements. Students will become familiar with computerized accounting software and Microsoft Excel. All students will benefit from learning the “language of business.” Students completing this course and B486 with a B or higher may be eligible for college credit at William Rainey Harper College.

B387 Business Law

Business Law is offered to students interested in the application of law to their personal lives and to business activities. Students study the administration of the law, various parts of a contract, termination, remedies, defenses for breach as well as real and personal property. Historical and current legal cases that cover constitutional, civil, criminal, and contract laws will be studied. Students demonstrate their knowledge of law and legal procedures by participating in mock trials. This course is recommended for students who are considering careers in law or business as well as those who seek a better understanding of the application of law to their personal lives.

B486 Accounting 2

Accounting 2 emphasizes departmental and payroll accounting, updating accounts for adjustments, partnership and corporation accounting, accounting control systems, accounting for taxes, notes and drafts, automated systems, cost accounting, special problems in accounting for sales, and how management uses accounting data. Activities are completed using computerized accounting software and Microsoft Excel. Accounting 2 is designed for any student planning to continue the pursuit of a business or accounting program in college, as well as for those who have an interest in accounting careers upon high school graduation. Students completing this course and B386 with a B or higher may be eligible for college credit when completing coursework at William Rainey Harper College.
