Driver Education Attendance Policy
District 211 offers students a one semester driver education program. The program of instruction is designed to provide
students with the program required by law, i.e., 30 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel practice
driving. Some programs include practice driving on the range also. Scheduling sufficient time for all phases of the program
becomes difficult because group sizes in the practice driving phases are limited to the number of passengers that a car can
carry. Each student must have perfect attendance in order to meet the minimum classroom and behind-the-wheel time required
by law in one semester. Each absence must be made up or the student will fail to meet the minimum times required by
law. The following attendance policy has been developed to help insure that each student meets the minimum time
requirements, is a competent driver, and is eligible to receive a drivers license by the final class of the semester, if that is their
goal. Since driving a car requires a strong sense of responsibility, this policy has been developed to place responsibility with the
student for scheduling and completing any make-up sessions that are necessary.
1. Make-up Policy
All absences from either classroom driver education or behind-the-wheel classes must be made up on the next available
date in the student's Driver Education schedule. These are the dates in which the student is not scheduled for any other
phase of the program. It is the responsibility of the student to report to a driver education teacher at the beginning of the class
period and to make his/her intent to make up a class known to the teacher. Failing to report to the teacher for a make-up on
the next available day will result in a zero being recorded for the student's grade on the missed day. When a student reaches a
total of five (5) zeros in the classroom portion of the program, they will be dropped from Driver Education.
2. Excused Absences
All excused absences must be made up or the student will not have enough hours to meet the time requirement established
by law. In the behind-the-wheel portion of the program, a call will be made to the parents after the second and the third
absences. The student will be dropped from the behind-the-wheel portion of the program after the fourth absence of any kind
from this portion of the program.
3. Class Cuts
A student will be dropped from the behind-the-wheel portion of the program on their fourth cut from either portion of the
program. They will remain in classroom driver education until they have four cuts from that portion of the program. At that
point, they will be dropped from the program altogether. Parents will be notified following the second and third incident of
cutting.
