The goal of this course is for the student to be functional and literate in a German environment beyond a beginning level. This can be accomplished by exclusively interacting in German. World current event topics will be addressed. The arts and humanities will be explored, including art, music, drama, literature, and history. Grammar previously presented in context will be formally introduced to facilitate functional communication. Competency in spoken and written German will be emphasized and will progress to intermediate level. Recorded media will be used to reinforce language skills. This course is taught almost exclusively in German.

L569 Advanced Placement German
Advanced Placement German places continuing emphasis on the student’s communicative competency through reading, writing, and oral conversation and comprehension skills. This class allows the student to receive AP credit. Some of the Advanced Placement Curriculum is used although the student may choose not to write the Advancement Placement Test. The student should also be aware that thorough preparation for the German AP exam requires effort above and beyond the classroom curriculum (i.e., extra sessions with teacher arranged by teacher and student).

German IV/AP are taught as a class with longer assignments being given to the AP students. Examples of material are materials dealing with the Holocaust, specifically the White Rose resistance group, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and others who stages resistance during the 2nd World War. Films and materials in German are used and supplemental grammar lessons are incorporated, Baron von Munchhausen, history, art, current events from authentic German newspapers. Students are encouraged to learn how to express their own interests and goals in German in an end of the year project. Grammar includes focusing on the subjunctive, complex sentences, the passive voice.
