Friendship Village is a “continuing care retirement community” (which means that we provide three levels of living):

Bridgegate is the most independent level.  Student volunteers in this area might assist some of the 500 residents in their activities, trips, recreational events, and computer classes.

The Willows provides assisted living for about 100 residents.  This was the first dedicated Assisted Living Unit in a continuing care community in the Chicago area.  Student Volunteers in this area might assist with arts and crafts activities, small groups, music, visiting and pushing residents in wheelchairs to and from an activity.

CrossBridge, our Health Care Center, provides higher level of care for Friend-ship Village residents and community people who need this environment.  This 250 bed Medicare-certified health facility provides skilled and intermediate nursing care and rehabilitation services care for residents with convalescent and chronic conditions.  In 1992, a Special Care Unit was developed in the Health Care Center to better meet the needs of persons with Alzheimer’s Disease or related disorders.  The Health Care Center is licensed by the State of Illinois as a skilled care nursing facility.  As such it is mandated to meet all state and federal regulations governing such institutions.  In addition to services listed above, student volunteers in this area might be asked to assist in various duties of nursing home care during the particular time of the day in which they are volunteering.

Adult Day Services (located at Roselle & Wise) provides services to persons who reside in the community and do not need 24 hour care.  Volunteers assist in the various activities and day trip provided to our ADS guests Monday - Friday, usually from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Number of students and days needed:   several students, variable days

We would like to present a unique volunteer experience for people of any age.  We have a home-based child centered program based on the Son-Rise program for our 8 year old autistic son, Brenen.  Brenen is  a moderate to high functioning autistic boy with excellent eye contact.  He loves to laugh and play with his volunteers.  We play with Brenen in a playroom 6-8 hours a day.  Through this play we interact and subsequently teach Brenen by following his lead.  We act as his speech therapists, occupational therapists, but most importantly his friend.  Our program is based on a loving accepting attitude.  We completely accept Brenen where he is at any moment in time, but still strive to help him relate, communicate, learn, and use imaginary play (these areas are challenging to autistic children).

We are asking for a four-hour  (two- two hour shifts) a week commitment for at least 6 months.  No experience is necessary.  We will train you.  If you love children, want to grow personally, or think special education teaching may be a career for you this is a great experience.

*THIS IS A 6 MONTH COMMITMENT!!!
