Cold War Essay Questions

1. One of the significant effects of the Cold War was the over-exaggerating of the true extent of Soviet influence and the ignoring of local conditions that led to the conditions in that country. Thus, we were engaged in policies that proved ineffective and alienated local citizens.

Using two different regions in the world, show how this statement would be correct. Be sure to develop the essay enough to show how local citizens would end up angry at the United States.

2. It has been said often that the U.S. never really cared about the spread of Communism or the extension of democracy, but just wanted to further it’s own economic interests. In other words, we just wanted our stuff!

Agree or disagree with this statement, using two different regions of the world. Make sure that you develop this essay to include at least two countries in each of the regions.

3. One of the effects of the Cold War was that, with the need to keep the Soviets out of a region, the U.S. became involved in local situations it was unable to deal with. This can be said of the Middle East and the Persian Gulf. Agree or disagree with this statement, using three countries in the region.
