Answer the following questions in a fully developed paragraph.  The paragraph should have a clear topic sentence and should be 4-5 sentences long.

 

 

 

1.  When the Irish immigrants pulled out of port, one exclaimed, “Will the last man out of  Ireland please lock the door!”  Why do you think he might have said this?

 

2.  Using passages from the text, define the word steerage as it is used in the chapter.   (do  not use a dictionary – figure it out from the novel!)

3. Write a short essay in the form of a personal narrative.  Make yourself one of the characters in the photograph and describe what is happening.  The essay should be 3 paragraphs long.  Do not describe the scene in the novel, but you may use the novel to formulate your own story.

  

 

     

4. Immigrants coming into the United States would pass under the Brooklyn Bridge and by the Statue of Liberty.  These are two of the

most important examples of architecture in the country.  Architecture is meant to give a certain message or give us a certain feeling.  What does

 this architecture say?  Write one paragraph for each.

 

 

 

    

 

Ellis Island was the main processing destination for immigrants entering the country.  From the novel, write four passages (2-3 sentences) describing the time Rose Nolan spent on or near Ellis Island.  Find at least one passage for each of the photographs above.   For each passage, describe what it means to you.
