Chapters 13-17

1.  Using the varied reactions of people in the book, define the concept of a sweatshop.

2.  Discuss how Rose attempted to keep her job with Mr. Moscovitz.

3.  You are Rose.  Write a letter to Da, describing the scene that led to your family being kicked out of your uncle's house.

4.  Using the novel, define and discuss the concept of piece work.  Be sure to include the hardships as well as the definition. 
     Remember, the novel will give you answers throughout the story.

5.  In Chapter 16, Rose's uncle and mother sit down to talk about the old days in Ireland.  How is life in America so different
    from Ireland?

6.  You are 18.  Your mother and father just brought you to college in California and are flying back to Illinois.   You are
    seeing them off at the airport.  Describe what is going through your mind.  Start with this - you have never used
    public transportation before and you need to get back to your college from the airport.
