After a brief introductory unit we begin our first real historical study as we examine the four original human civilizations. We look at the geographic features that allowed civilization to develop in these particular places as well as the cultural features that make each of these civilizations unique. One of the major cultural topics in this unit is the first three of the world's five great religions. As the course progresses the students will fill out a chart that identifies ten different factors about each of these religions so that they can see the many similarities and limited differences of these five systems of faith.
Our skill development focus during this unit is on reading and notemaking. We will spend time talking about how to read a textbook effectively along with how to avoid getting over burdened by factual detail. The students will be introduced to an outlining exercise that we will continue to do throughout the year. It was designed to help them develop this important skill while gathering the historical information they need.
