The primary goal of this course is to develop confidence in communication through the mastery of basic language skills.

Useful vocabulary is presented in topics which are of mutual interest for young people. Audio-visual media are used to enhance listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing. Culture is presented in authentic dialogs, photos, realia, tapes, and videos. German is taught in a whole language approach which implies the teaching of language in context. Use of computer technology is encouraged.

PREREQUISITE: Freshmen, satisfactory entrance test scores; upper class, English (A,B,C)

LEVEL: 1,2,3,4 One year One unit

Example of lessons in German I:

3 types of nouns, masculine - der Tisch (the table); feminine - die Wand (the wall); and neuter - das Buch (the book)

Colors:  rot (red), gelb (yellow), schwarz (black)

Vocabulary:  der Bleistift, die Tafel, das Heft, das Papier, der Schreibtisch, der Tisch, der Kuli,die Kreide, der Computer, die Fahne, die Leinwand,

Greetings:  Guten Tag, Guten Morgen, Tschüs, Auf Wiedersehen, Wie geht's, Es geht mir gut!, Nicht so gut, nicht schlecht.
