The "Herreninsel"…

Blick auf den Kanal, Foto: F. Schmidt-Ehrenberg … is the largest of the three islands on Lake Chiemsee and became world famous through the building of the palace by the "fairy-tale king" next Ludwig II. of Bavaria. You will have to take your time to visit the island of about 240 hectare with the Royal Palace, the parks, the public garden and the fountains. So please make sure that you have enough spare time to spend on the island to fully appreciate the beauty of "Herrenchiemsee".

This information will help you to plan your trip to "Herrenchiemsee":

Crossing by boat from/to Prien-Stock about 20 min
Horse-drawn carriage to the Royal Palace or about 15 min
Walk to the Royal Palace about 20 min
Guided tour in the Royal Palace about 30-35 min
Visit of the King Ludwig II. Museum about 30-45 min
Visit of the Museum at the Augustinian Monastery about 30-45 min

Please do not forget to take into consideration the time for visiting the landscape as well as for rests and waiting periods that unfortunately cannot be avoided.

Tip:  A hiking trail of 7 km around the island leads you to interesting places. Walking mainly through a mixed forest, away from the stream of visitors, these places offer insights into completely different aspects of "Herrenchiemsee". A walk definitely worthwhile!
