Enrichment for Freshmen
This is a level one Spanish course for freshmen
who have completed at least one year of junior high school Spanish. These
students are beyond a level one course, but not quite ready for a level two
course. The course is designed to develop the students’ communicative skills
using thematic topics. Special attention is given to enhancing study and
language learning skills in addition to speaking, listening, reading, and
writing skills infused with Hispanic culture. Upon completion of L164, the
student will proceed to L266.
PREREQUISITE: At least one year of junior high school Spanish and
recommendation of the junior high school teacher and/or testing.
LEVEL: 1, One year One unitL165 Spanish 2
for Freshmen
This is a regular level two Spanish course for freshmen who have
completed a two-year sequence in junior high school. The course is designed
to further develop the students’ communicative skills using thematic
vocabulary units and real-life situations. Authentic materials, tapes, and videos are used to reinforce language (speaking, listening,
reading, and writing) skills as well as an appreciation of the Hispanic
culture. Upon completion of L165, the student will proceed to L366. This
sequence can lead to Spanish V, advanced placement.
PREREQUISITE: Two years of junior high school Spanish and recommendation
of the junior high school teacher and/or testing

L166 Spanish 1
This is a beginning level course for those students with little or no
experience learning the Spanish language. Class time is spent developing
communicative skills. Grammar and vocabulary are introduced as needed to
communicate a particular topic. Reading and writing skills are introduced.
Audio-visual materials are used to present various aspects of Hispanic life
and culture in a lively, low-risk setting.

L266 Spanish 2
This course continues the methods used in level 1 and is designed to
further develop the students’ communicative skills using thematic vocabulary
units and real-life situations. Authentic materials, realia, tapes, and
videos are used to reinforce language (speaking, listening, reading, and
writing) skills, grammar skills, and an appreciation of the Hispanic
culture.

L366 Spanish 3
Students in Spanish 3 continue to develop the skills of listening,
speaking, writing, and reading. A special emphasis is put on communication
in the target language. Units of study include short stories with a cultural
content and the study of thematic vocabulary. A variety of audio-visual
materials is used in the class to help students increase their listening and
speaking abilities. Students also study and apply more advanced grammatical
structures.

L466 Spanish 4
Spanish 4 students study a variety of units which provide opportunities
to develop more fully their listening, speaking, writing, and reading skills
as well as their knowledge of the Hispanic culture. This course is taught
almost exclusively in Spanish. Tapes, slides, and videos enhance language
development. A grammar review also is included.

L579 Advanced Placement Spanish
In Advanced Placement Spanish, emphasis is placed on each student’s
communicative competency through reading, writing, oral conversation, and
comprehensive skills. This class also prepares students to take college
placement examinations. The Advanced Placement Curriculum is used although
the student may choose not to write the Advanced Placement Test.

L142 French 2 for
Freshmen
This is a regular Level Two French course for freshmen who have
completed a two-year sequence in junior high school. The focus of each unit
is to provide the student with the communicative skills to survive in a
French speaking country. Tapes and videos reinforce speaking and listening
skills. Authentic materials are used to teach reading and writing. Students
learn various aspects of French culture and explore regions of France.
PREREQUISITE: Two years of junior high school French and recommendation
of the junior high school teacher and/or testing

This course is designed to give basic survival skills to the beginning
student. Writing and grammar are introduced to reinforce the communicative
skills presented. Reading skills are developed through the use of authentic
materials. Tapes and videos are used to reinforce the communicative goals.
Students are introduced to basic cultural difference between France and the
United States.

This course reinforces the skills learned in Level One by introducing
students to cultural situations that they are likely to encounter in French
speaking countries. Tapes and videos are used to reinforce speaking and
listening skills; writing is related to real life situations. Students learn
about French culture and explore regions of France.

This course reviews French 2 and introduces the students to more complex
conversational and grammatical situations in the French-speaking world.
Technology continues to be used to develop speaking and listening skills.
Students study the culture, history, and cuisine of France and other
French-speaking countries.

L462 French 4
French 4 students study a variety of themes that will enable the student
to function at a more advanced level in a French-speaking country.
Vocabulary, reading, writing, speaking, and listening activities are
organized around current issues in French life. Students learn more advanced
grammatical functions. This course is conducted almost exclusively in
French. Reading includes contemporary French culture and fiction. Tapes and
videos are included. This course is conducted almost exclusively in French.

L559 Advanced Placement French

L163 German 1
The primary goal of this course is to develop confidence in
communication through the mastery of basic language skills. Useful
vocabulary is presented in topics which are of mutual interest for young
people. Audio-visual media are used to enhance listening comprehension,
speaking, reading, and writing. Culture is presented in authentic dialogs,
photos, realia, tapes, and videos. German is taught in a whole language
approach which implies the teaching of language in context. Use of computer
technology is encouraged.

This is a regular level-two German course for freshmen who have
completed a two-year sequence in junior high school. Upon completion of
L167, the student will proceed to L363. This sequence can lead to German V,
advanced placement. Students develop proficiency in the language skills of
listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing. Realia, photos,
tapes, and videos are used to reinforce language skills. They are used to
enrich understanding of the multi-cultural nature of the German speaking
world. Use of computer technology is encouraged.

L263 German 2
The goal of this course is to expand the communication skills from level
one. Vocabulary and skills which are presented in thematic context are
reviewed and reinforced. Multi-culturalism, geographical regions, and
cultural aspects of the German speaking peoples is continued from level one.
The use of authentic recorded materials is continued. Computer projects may
be offered.

L363 German 3
The goal of this course is to enable the student to be proficient in
listening comprehension, speaking, reading, writing, and cultural awareness
on a functional level in a German environment. Expressing likes, dislikes,
and opinions on a variety of topics in a spoken and written medium is a
primary goal. The student will be introduced to examples of literature,
poetry, art, music, and drama. Social, political, and environmental concerns
will be presented. Authentic recorded media will be integral in this level
of German instruction. Students will be encouraged to further contacts in
Germany.

L463 German 4
The goal of this course is for the student to be functional and literate
in a German environment beyond a beginning level. This can be accomplished
by exclusively interacting in German. World current event topics will be
addressed. The arts and humanities will be explored, including art, music,
drama, literature, and history. Grammar previously presented in context will
be formally introduced to facilitate functional communication. Competency in
spoken and written German will be emphasized and will progress to
intermediate level. Recorded media will be used to reinforce language
skills. This course is taught almost exclusively in German.

L569 Advanced Placement German
Advanced Placement German places continuing emphasis on the student’s
communicative competency through reading, writing, and oral conversation and
comprehension skills. This class prepares students to take college placement

student may choose not to write the Advancement Placement Test.
